Literary & general fiction this week: genre series take half the chart
Four genre authors hold 24 of the top 50 Literature & Fiction spots. The book-club novels that stay on the chart have six-figure review counts.
What's on the chart
We read the Kindle Literature & Fiction top 50 for Sunday, November 8. This is the broadest fiction chart on Kindle, and this week genre series hold almost half of it.
Four authors, 24 spots. Dungeon Crawler Carl (all eight books), Sarah J. Maas (seven), Freida McFadden (five) and Rebecca Yarros (four) together hold 24 of the 50 places. A game-world adventure, romantasy and domestic thrillers are what most fiction buyers are choosing right now.
The book-club novels that stay have huge followings. Theo of Golden is #6 with more than 209,000 reviews. The Correspondent is #44 with more than 170,000. Yesteryear has nearly 138,000. The Calamity Club is #5 with more than 103,000. These books have been on the chart for all 41 days we have data for. Yesteryear carries "A GMA Book Club Pick" in its title: a reading-group pick keeps selling month after month.
Big literary names are present but lower. Ann Patchett's Whistler (#29), Jodi Picoult's Hollow Bones (#30) and Barbara Kingsolver's Partita (#26) are all on the chart, below the genre series.
Something new. Benjamin Percy's Exoplanet is #3 after two days. Elle Kennedy's college romance The Deal appeared at #41 after two days.
The China watch
China's largest free-reading platform, Fanqie, said on November 2 that realism, history and career stories are among the genres that keep growing. One standout weaves classical scholarship into its plot: Maoxing Langya has more than 18 million reads, and its short-drama version has passed 1 billion views. Fanqie also reports that writers aged 18 to 23 grew more than threefold in a year, and more people over 50 are starting to write.
What this means for your next book
- Book-club novels win on staying power, not launch week. The literary books here have been on the chart for over a month with huge review counts. Plan for word of mouth and reading groups, not just a big first week.
- If you write across genres, label the genre clearly. Most buyers on this chart picked a clear genre series, even while shopping general fiction.
- Real-world and historical detail is selling in China too. Stories built on a real job, a real place or a real piece of history are growing there. That's a good sign for grounded fiction.
